Smart Water Use in Citrus Groves

Sweet Valley Citrus Satsuma Harvest

Water management is one of the most important components of sustainable citrus production. Research from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences shows that precise irrigation scheduling is critical, especially in groves affected by Citrus Greening Disease.

Studies indicate that HLB-affected trees use less water due to reduced canopy and root systems, meaning growers must carefully adjust irrigation to avoid both drought stress and excess water.

UF/IFAS recommends:

  • Maintaining soil moisture in the root zone (top ~12 inches)
  • Using tools like soil moisture sensors or irrigation apps
  • Adjusting irrigation timing and volume based on tree health

These practices not only improve tree performance but also help reduce nutrient leaching and protect groundwater resources

Sustainable water use ensures that citrus growers can produce high-quality fruit while protecting Florida’s natural resources.
